Belinda and Teddy
Dearest John, Three months ago I came to you in desperation with my five year old thoroughbred gelding, Teddy. I had been injured and felt bewildered as I did not know what to do. Over the past three months you re-educated me and my horse. I can’t believe how much I have learnt about horseman ship and riding. It has been an amazing journey that was not always easy for me. Your patience and understanding were the key to Teddy and my success. He has been home with me now for two weeks and things are going well. I am enjoying riding him and building our skills together. Your training system has allowed me to follow on with his education. I can’t thank you enough, you are an amazing trainer and teacher. I hope that Teddy and I can continue our journey with you in the future.
Jupiter is the first ‘young horse’ I have owned. When I asked around for recommendations for someone to start him under saddle, numerous people said “take him to John Mark Payne”. I’m glad I took their advice. I found John easy to deal with and it was clear from the start that he would work with my horse in a fair, consistent and thorough way.
When I brought Jupiter home his response to aids were all solid and reliable, including him responding to downward transitions even when he was a bit excited. On only my second ride I was able to mount and dismount in the middle of the paddock and was able to open gates whilst staying in the saddle.
I would happily recommend John Mark Payne Equine Training Services.
John is an excellent horseman and very ethical in all his training - when John broke in a horse for me he was highly recommended by multiple people who I trust - he went out of his way to ensure the horses was adequately trained and went above and beyond what was initially discussed and paid for only having the horse's best interests at heart . ( many unethical people out there but John is someone that can be trusted imo )
John has handled many of my miniature horses over the years, his patience and knowledge of horses is excellent. He also is very good with teaching myself and friends with different methods of training. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone.
John as done an amazing job with my mare. What he started with was a horse with no manners, who had scared me to the point of not being able to do anything with her. What I took home after only a few short weeks was a calm, responsive, respectful horse who I am now able to handle (and ride! which was something I would not dare to try before working with John) with no fear. John worked with both my horse and me, helping us to understand each other and started what I hope will be a very long relationship with an exceptional horse. I cannot say thank you enough for all his help.
His methods are simple, with outstanding results. If you have a horse you are having trouble with, put your trust in his methods - I promise you will not regret it (and your horse will thank you as well!)
John is an excellent horseman and did an amazing job breaking two young horses in for me. His methods keep the happiness of the horse at the forefront while still teaching the horse to be obedient and willing to work. They came back easy to handle in all aspects and were even working in a nice frame. They also came back in good health and condition. I highly recommend John to anyone needing a horse broken in. He is very professional and shares a true love for the animals in his care.
John Mark started Beluga for me as a 2 year old. Beluga had not been handled much at all and had only recently been gelded. John Mark did an excellent job and as history would show he went on to be a great competition horse. Beluga is now enjoying his new owner who I am sure will learn a lot from him.
I recently purchased an Archimedes mare who John Mark again did an excellent job starting for me. Annie is now working towards a dressage career with Brook Graham. I say 'started' as both horses came back well mannered with excellent basics but with their special personalities still vibrant. This made training more of a partnership.
I would recommend John Mark to start your special horse. I know that I will use John Mark again when I purchase a future partner.
I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with John Payne for around ten years now. John is one of those rare people who is passionate about improving all areas of his horsemanship skills, even at his high level. I know him to be hard working , honest and extremely talanted. I have personally used Johns help with one of our horses Mystique, who is an extremely difficult mare to read. His work with this horse speaks volumes of his talents, I have regularly without hesitation, recomended him to others.
Every time I work with John, I come away with a renewed sense of hope for our industry's future. He is a quiet family man with a raging thirst for knowledge and self improvement.
I am proud to call John a "friend" and see our collaborations lasting well into the future.
It's not often in life you meet someone who has so much drive, passion and dedication to a sport. John Mark possesses these qualities and constantly strives for perfection in his handling, riding and training of performance horses. I have had several horses started by John, I say 'started' because they dont come home with broken spirits but are able to be taken out to a competition, tied up and worked in a soft round frame with an elastic back.
John is constantly aiming to improve and spends copious amounts of time reading, going to lessons, watching overseas trainers and thinking about the correctness in their horses ways of going.
He is a thinking horseman... who doesn't think he knows it all.
I found John to be a man of few words but the communication he has with horses is second to none. He is attentive, patient, experienced and knowledgeable.
Often you hear stories of breakers "breaking" in horses well until you get on to ride them and find they do not understand the concept of "contact". This is not the case with John, he carefully introduces the young horses to the idea of going forward into a "contact". I believe John has played an important part of Chester's education and when its time for my next young horse to be broken in, I will be calling John up.

John Payne has 'broken in' many horses for me. His love of horses is obvious, and his calm, no fuss method is a winning formula with young warmbloods. The horses come back accepting of the leg and contact. They float, handle traffic and can be ridden in company of others. The bottom line is, I always feel safe on a horse that John has broken in. The horses that he has broken in are testimony enough to this quiet and humble man's approach to horses.
